What Do You Love About Winter?

What I love about Winter is being able to stay indoors and drink hot chocolate all day. What about you? Do you have a favourite thing about Winter?

I love that there are no ticks.

I love the surreal quiet just after a snowstorm.

I love watching my dog roll in the snow.

I love my winter coat.

Cold, lack of mosquitoes, quiet, lack of other people outside, the fact I can get away with boxy old woolen coats instead of light clothes.

In nthn new south wales I loved the winter weather because the days are perfect; sunny, not too hot, clear and utterly perfect. You can enjoy the sun in winter up there, ypu can go out in it,
but in summer it's to be avoided. It's too hot up there in summer. Autumn is also lovely.

But now I live in Melbourne it will be much colder, but not like Nthn hemisphere cold. I'm yet to experience winter down here in this millenia. It will colder; windy, icy winds and wet. What I look forward to is dressing for the cold, coz it rarely gets cold where I've been living, not in the daytime anyway. I'm looking forward to wearing scarves and boots and leggings under my flowy black pants and jackets and having lots of warming soups and stews and roast dinners.

Obviously, there's a mix of pros and cons, but for this I will ignore the cons and focus upon positivity. I do have my orchids (about 40) and many orchid species do like to bloom in the winter after their warm weather growing season. So, usually starting in November and through April, I have tropical blooms color and faint fragrances in my home. Living in the northern half of Australia, I might get to see the stars again. (But not for another three or four months.) We’re heading into autumn, so the temperatures are plummeting into the low 20s C (70s F) Summer just gone got up to about 43.5C (110F.) Humidity can go up to 80-90%.

Those are beautiful!

The things I like about winter are lack of mosquitoes, fewer visitors to my home, cooking hearty meals with vegetables and herbs from my winter garden, feeding and watching wild birds and wearing warm house slippers all the time. I also like using the cold as an excuse to lay around and watch too much TV. ;)

That it knocks down the skeeter and voracious grasshopper populations, and cools the ocean prior to hurricane season. Other than those things, absolutely nothing. I tolerate Winter like I tolerate traffic.

1. Snow
2. Christmas time at the beginning of winter
3. No bugs
4. Getting to wear my toboggan that has a picture of horses on it
5. Certain shirts that I get to wear
6. Looking for last year's bird and squirrel nests in the trees
7. Not getting overheated

I spent more than 20 years living in the tropics where winter doesn't exist, now that I'm back in a temperate climate it's taken me quite a few years to adjust and adapt. This year I'm determined that I'm going to be better acclimatised and I'm going to try to embrace the cold and get out more.

There's less tourists in winter which means I can get out in the bush more and see more things, and most of the bush in southern Australia looks so much prettier in winter too, none of our native trees are deciduous. I still really hate wearing so much clothing though, I'm going to have to toughen up a bit and get used to it.

Melbourne seems to have two different winters, the first half of winter is usually dry and clear and sunny even though you can't feel any warmth from the sun, then it turns dark and dreary and wet towards the end of July and early August. That wind can cut right through to your bones.

Happy Birthday, Outdated!

When there are those bright, cold high-pressure winter days where everything is coated in white, and the air is crystal clear and silky smooth. You can see for miles. Everything looks like a Christmas card, and it's fantastic.

Just wear lots of layers, three pairs of gloves, and break out the electric waistcoat and socks.

Christmas (of course!)

Pokemon Day (February 27th - just a few days away!)

No bugs, and especially no spiders where I am at

Wearing warm blankets while watching TV or surfing the Internet

Very quiet season in general

Other than those things, nothing else.

I feel much better when it's cold than hot, on summer the heat seems to drain my energy and makes me feel bad.

The silence of snow on the ground, and the general brightness it produces.
Sunlight through a frosted window.
Hoarfrost on trees, and various other icy phenomena, including wind-sculpted snow drifts.
Practice sliding around in a car at safe, low speeds with long reaction times.
Watching the days get longer and the shadows get shorter, and various seasonal lighting effects from windows.
