I hate my pillows

I can't sleep properly because my pillows seem to be uncomfortable. I have to use two pillows, one memory foam pillow, but that's too hard to lay my head on with earplugs or headphones, so I put it underneath the other pillow, which is a normal pillow. But my shoulder misshapes the memory foam pillow underneath (I always lay on my side), so I have to keep turning it over, but it's completely gone a weird shape and the pillow on the top doesn't sit right on the pillow underneath, and feels distractingly uncomfortable.
It's like the pillow on the top goes almost vertical, which for some reason annoys me. I just want my pillows to be flat, in a horizontal way, not flat flat. But it's my stupid shoulders that sort of push the pillows upwards so I'm laying on one bulging corner of the pillow or something.

I spend a lot of time each night trying to get the pillows right. It's making falling asleep difficult, which then makes motivation difficult during the day. I just want a comfortable, good night's sleep.

Any tips on how to solve this pillow issue?

For the headphone thing I use these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08343DPDM

They are soooo small that when you wear them in bed you can sleep on your side and they don’t dig into your ear at all. Game changer for me lol.

I have the shoulder problem also.
The answer I found to this was to get a big bed pillow and put a small round throw pillow made for a chair/couch in the middle on top of the bed pillow.
Then when my shoulder pushes the bed pillow up, the small round throw pillow gives my head the support I need.
It keeps my head from punching into the corner bulges of the bed pillow or pushing against the headboard.

Those soft yet firm kid's pillows shaped liked an animal head work well.
Not as big as a throw pillow.

Neck and shoulder problems here, too. I've been using one of these as a regular pillow. I don't put it around my neck, but use it as pillow. It works pretty well with headphones, too. It can go on top of another pillow. The solid part goes under my neck, my ear goes right in the middle, and the open part is at the top of my head. It aligns my neck nicely.

I am the same way about pillows. I can set them up just right, but then I wake up and have to gently readjust to get them tucked under that sweet spot between my ear and neck.

Have you tried fluffing your pillows in the dryer? That's always nice, to have a super fluffy warm pillow.

We bought new pillows yesterday but mine was too soft, so I used one of the old pillows (not the memory foam) to lay on and put the new pillow underneath. It was much better.
But I couldn't sleep because the duvet was too thick. My husband had bought a 10 tog duvet and I was so hot, even though it was a cold night and I sleep starkers. Whenever I put my limbs out the duvet I got cold, but when I put them back inside the duvet I immediately got hot again. And I can't sleep when I'm hot. Also I had Christmas songs repeating non-stop in my head, which also distracts me from trying to sleep.
I had to change back to the thinner duvet, even though I was being a bit selfish, but I needed my sleep. My husband can sleep in any duvet so it didn't really make much difference to him, although he did like the 10 tog duvet.

So you guys use one duvet? I read something a while ago that really surprised me, there seems to be something called the 'Scandinavian sleeping method'. I was surprised because here in Scandinavia we call it 'normal'. I have never even thought about two people using one duvet. Have you tried using two duvets? I think it makes a lot of sense.

An interesting idea! I also seem to try to tunnel head first through the headboard in my sleep for some odd reason. Sometimes the pillows get wedged between the top of the mattress and the headboard/wall.

That happens to me, too, usually because the two old cats are lying on my feet or between my feet at the bottom of the mattress which causes me to scrunch up toward the headboard.

I like satin pillowcases. They don't leave wrinkles on my face when I wake up and they always feel cool on my face and neck, unlike cotton pillowcases.

Well I guess we could use two single duvets but we never have. We share a king-size duvet in a king-size bed. It's OK most of the time.

I think most of my pillows are filled with fluff or stuffing (same thing).

I sometimes have a cat snuggled up with me too :-) , but he prefers to lay on my hip or shoulder so I don't think he causes me to drive through the headboard in my case. It always happens whether he's there or not.

That's one thing I would like to do, have the cats in my bedroom. But I can't deal with all the fur and stuff they would leave behind in my bed. So that's the only room in the house that is off-limits to cats. But it would be really nice to have them there at night. My yorkie used to sleep in my bed, she would snuggle up on my shoulder and neck and snore in my ear. :) That was really nice.

Sounds like you use your travel pillow in a similar way to the cylinder or bolster pillow I have! I may have to try a travel pillow as the way you described it makes it sound like it could work for me :-)

If it helps with headphones, then that would be great too as I can never use headphones when I'm trying to sleep because one is getting pressed into my ear which is not helpful for sleeping.

I always like it when my cat comes for cuddles when I'm going to sleep :-) I haven't noticed that he leaves much fur behind to be fair, but he has relatively short hair. But I understand if it causes you problems you'd want to prevent your cats from sleeping in your bed.
