I hate my pillows

It's always amusing to me how people have so many varied preferences between pillows and mattresses.

My latest attempt to solve an ever-weakening mattress was to place a 55 x 24 x1 inch melamine desktop between my mattress and my boxsprings. Instantly made my mattress feel brand new, and extra firm.

Though there's no comparable thing I can do for my pillows. I'll have to buy them new if I want stiffer ones that I prefer.

The one drawback I've found with a preference for such stiffness is that on rare occasion when I use my ear protectors in bed, they're quite stiff and solid as well....so it amounts to a lot of pressure against my head and ears. Oh well...
 
The most comfortable pillow I have ever used, now that I think about it, was a rolled up jacket while camping out.

Perhaps what we need isn't fluff, maybe it's support.

I agree, there seems to be a lot of posts that at the very least indicate a preference for support rather than fluffiness. I do wonder if the need for a supportive, resistant pillow is an ND thing? It might explain why there isn't an abundance of pillows that suit our needs.

I am super fussy about bedtime. Just face it everybody, this is when our true sensory issues just completely go off the radar. I can't stand sheets tucked in tightly, my feet kick everything off. I will punch and manipulate that pillow until it knows who is boss. And l have super broad shoulders, and l need pillows for my side sleep, and pillows for my giraffe legs to feel comfortable. Omg. And don't get me started on the sheets and blankets, l could write a 500 page thesis paper on that alone.

This is so true! It's not just bedding either. It's temperature, have I got some sort of low volume sound? If there's nothing but cold darkness and "silence" it's like someone turned up the volume on every transient sound in the house to the level of a cannon going off! Also every ache and pain I have permeates my mind.

But apparently the medical consensus dictates that this is the ONLY healthy way a person can sleep! In Orwellian New Speak they call it "Sleep Hygiene".
 
I can't sleep properly because my pillows seem to be uncomfortable. I have to use two pillows, one memory foam pillow, but that's too hard to lay my head on with earplugs or headphones, so I put it underneath the other pillow, which is a normal pillow. But my shoulder misshapes the memory foam pillow underneath (I always lay on my side), so I have to keep turning it over, but it's completely gone a weird shape and the pillow on the top doesn't sit right on the pillow underneath, and feels distractingly uncomfortable.
It's like the pillow on the top goes almost vertical, which for some reason annoys me. I just want my pillows to be flat, in a horizontal way, not flat flat. But it's my stupid shoulders that sort of push the pillows upwards so I'm laying on one bulging corner of the pillow or something.

I spend a lot of time each night trying to get the pillows right. It's making falling asleep difficult, which then makes motivation difficult during the day. I just want a comfortable, good night's sleep.

Any tips on how to solve this pillow issue?
I have a theory of pillows that is I have the same issues where pillows are often uncomfortable so I like to sleep with one flat one, sometimes I sleep with 2 because I need more comfort but then it can hurt my spine and annoy the hell out of me.

My theory is it is better for the spine to sleep without a pillow no matter what experts say because it actually bends the spine to raise your head like that. I may be wrong some people may say it aligns the spine.
But what makes me spine not hurt is sleep without a pillow not always in the back but side.
It depends how you lay too.
But you know who invented pillows?
I guess they thought it was for comfort and luxury but sometimes so comfortable and almost therapistic without...why because it is just sleeping on a great fresh sheeted bed without the pillow something so calming about it.
It kind of puts you closer to the floor too well you know you kind of feel calm like it like when you meditate, you lie flat backed so lying without pillows may actually relax you more.
People become too overdependant on pillows
 
If we're going to broaden the discussion to bedding generally.... let's see. Satin sticks to me, i wake up with it stuck to my face. If it's cold enough so it doesn't stick it'll give me hypnic jerks the whole time, it's too sheer. Flannel is volume 11 on sensory input, like I'm aware of every square centimetre that's touching me. So plain cotton for me.

For covers the idea of any sort of tucked in sheets is a big no no. Also anything that can tangle round my feet. Pyjamas absolutely cannot abide, the legs always twist around your calf muscles, and the top seem to twist round your waist. I like duvets, but can't deal with light ones (hypnic jerks again). It has to be HEAVY. We have a 2mx2m bed, and that duvet is a BEAST, it's heavy as anything. It presses you down into the mattress but you can stick legs out the edges and also grapple it like a bear. Rule of thumb: as little sensory input as possible, but what there is can't be ticklish.

Silk or satin pajamas don't stick to your legs or waist. Unless you're wearing too small a size for your body. I love them.

For me, ALL PJ's become straightjackets over the course of the night. No matter what the are made of, within an hour or two the have ridden above my knees, half inside out, turn backwards from the arms down, and seem to be trying to strangle me at the neckline. I wake from feverish dreams of being tied down, Gulliver-style.
 
Agree with @MNAus , having my feet tucked into a blanket tucked tightly under mattress, makes my entire head and body explode. Like l hate it. So when l lived on reservation, this co-worker of my ex needed a emergency babysitter and brought Joseph over with his little bed that you strap him in and then bind him so he can't move. That was so foreign to me, but as l strapped him in he fell asleep. It's called a cradle board, as he was baby-age. Such beautiful inquisitive eyes on that child. But l digress. Back to pillows.
