Looking for low cost and healthy meal ideas.

Fried dough = dough that has been fried.
Does not have to be a sweet dough.

Just flour or flours of various types, mixed together
and fried. Doesn't have to be deep fried.

In fact, if a person is in a position such that
fried dough is the meal, using much fat/grease
may be too expensive. So, pan fried.
 
If you have a Pinterest, look me up! I have tons of recipes posted that are very budget friendly and simple both of the healthy variety and unhealthy savory variety and make enough for left overs to last a few days. My name on Pinterest is Alexandria Holmes :)

I understand. It's poverty food that could keep someone alive. As long as you have some flour and water to make a dough, and a little fat, you can fry it and survive another day. I hope none of us ever reach that point but I know that would be a feast for many hungry people around the world today.

If you were stranded on a deserted island (with a fresh water source) and could take 5 foods with you to survive, what would you take? I'd want rice, beans, pork, limes, and a crate of Cote du Rhone wine.
 
I'm not sure what fried dough is, other than doughnuts, but I have eaten and loved fried Navajo bread. It is absolutely delicious. It reminds me of Naan bread.

They sell fried dough at American county fairs and street festivals, etc. Basically deep fried and then sprinkled livpberalky with powdered sugar.

Navajo bread is unhealthy, but very popular at pow wows and other Native gatherings. There has been a lot of discussion within the Native American communities to eat more healthy and end the scourge of rampant obesity, heart disease, and diabetes.

I also LOVE Naan bread but that is not fried (at least I don’t think so).

That's a good point. Often lightly fried/sauteed foods have less fat than foods made with fatty ingredients and then cooked someway other than fried which is ostensibly deemed a "healthy" way to cook. Example: the Mediterranean diet. It's replete with foods sauteed, braised, roasted, stewed and smothered in olive oil. Olive oil is healthy, almost as healthy as other vegetable oils such as corn, canola, safflower, peanut or rapeseed. If one were to deep fat fry everything in pork lard at too low a temperature so the food soaks up the grease, then the resultant food would taste awful, greasy, and be unhealthy. Ingredients and cooking technique are critical to producing healthful and tasty food. Frying may be a healthier option than oven baking or steaming depending on the cook's ingredients.
