Perhaps the pharmaceutical industry promotes social antagonism toward a useful plant-based drug that they cannot control and distribute for their profit.
Actually in the U.S. it's possible that cannabis might be reclassified from it's current "Schedule 1" status which includes hard drugs like heroin and cocaine to a "Schedule III" status (which includes prescribed drugs such as codeine). If that happens then on a federal level, rather than being outright illegal like it is now, it would only be allowed by prescription as deemed medically necessary.
In essence then, if cannabis moved from Schedule I to Schedule III, then the pharmaceutical industry would have sole control and monopoly over cannabis (from a federal standpoint).
A better move in my opinion is to DESCHEDULE cannabis altogether. Alcohol isn't a "scheduled" "controlled substance", but clearly it can still be regulated. In short, if society believes cannabis needs some level of regulation (e.g. age restrictions, etc), it should simply be regulated by the states in a similar way to how states regulate alcohol.
A reclassification to Schedule III would be a windfall and complete "lock" on cannabis for pharmaceutical companies and would be produced and sold solely by pharmaceutical companies. No thank you.
