When I was a kid the biggest thing we had were Gobstoppers. They became less popular in recent years because kids were putting them in the microwave and they explode. The explosion is usually a delayed reaction so they were in the kid's mouths when they exploded.

Looks like a choking hazard for small kids!

They're about the size of a golf ball. I remember forcing one in to my mouth once when I was little and I wasn't able to spit it back out again, it really was a gobstopper. I had no choice but to suck on it for a while.
