I thought exactly the same as you, that's why I went with Bile. To "answer with bile" is to give a bitter response.

Intestines need it, but are not it! Though it would be a lie to say they are not partly composed of it! As is pretty much all life.
This more in that direction than digestion! Digestion is one of millions of places it's required.
Think more towards the first three lines of riddle.

Them is similar to my answer on amino acids (from which proteins are made - no, that's not a clue! )
