Some non-gamers are telling me gaming is a waste of time.

I read romance novels. A lot of people would call that a waste of time, but I have fun doing it. If it brings you some enjoyment it isn't a waste of time. Listening to people tell you something you enjoy doing is a waste of time is a waste of time.

Moreover recent studies have shown that people being treated for TBIs from stroke, accidents, etc. actually have a much better outcome with the inclusion of interactive RPG and/or virtual reality games. Cognitive function and motor control is almost 30% better than with just traditional therapies alone.

I don't play a lot of video games, but I still pull out my Skylanders on a regular basis.

I use paranormal romance novels as an instruction manual on love.:p
Or wishful thinking.;)
Specifically the werewolf ones. For obvious reasons. Lol.

I don't get it. What is a "waste of time"? What are we all striving for? Is there a prize? We live however long we live and then we die.

Generally this usually comes from the "if it's not prOdUctIVe it's not worth doing" sort of mentality. The same sort of viewpoint that leads someone to tell you to "get a REAL job" even if you HAVE a job, simply because the job you do have isnt a traditional sell-your-soul-to-a-company type.

Often the person saying it doesnt REALLY understand that yes, there's more types of "productive" than just "makes money for company". Though they'll swear up and down that they EXACTLY know the definition and they are right and you are wrong and get off your butt and GET A JOB argh

Yes, I did have to hear that one a lot way back when, and yes, it drove me crazy.

There were surveys done on older people who gamed everyday. It raised their response time in dealing with things like driving because it was speeding up the eye to hand coordination. So l say to gamers, you are just keeping your senses sharp.

As far as the relationship shows, l enjoy watching these because l was in an 18 year marriage. I want some ideas that these relationship coach's offer, l want to see what do couples struggle with. Because relationships are tough. On me.

I love snowboarding games. That was so exhilarating. It reminded me of skiing. The music was beautiful. It was my daughter's video game. My gaming choice was racing. I still love those. No killing of anything.

This gaming start was probably an autistic person who sat down and said l gotta come up with something fun to do in this lifetime. And we all benefitted.

Seriously, am I the only person who saw the show title “Wife Swap” and thought it was some swinger sexual thing based off that title alone?

I have never gamed, a issue during my recovery in the hospital, a lot of their therapy involved games I was not familiar with. The only game I enjoy is real life, and what are it's rules. Anything else is artificial. Nothing beats the big game.

We all have our hobbies. My dad doesn’t really understand why I like video games but he can see that it entertains me when I’m not working and keeps me out of trouble.

No matter how good your imagination or skilled as a game developer, it will never beat the real thing. The only game I ever cared about was how does the universe play out it's game with all of us as pieces. Every thing else is trivial compared to this. Some times you must break the big game into smaller pieces and determine how this smaller game works. In my case now ,Covid.

I can’t imagine myself ever giving up gaming. My parents are still hoping I’ll grow out of my special interests (like gaming and true crime) but since they’ve been my interest for 30+ years I think they should have given up hope a long time ago.

If you enjoy your game, then game.
So a few years back, I had a really bad car accident and got a right frontal lobe tbi. I couldn't comprehend anything written. The doctors sent me for months of therapy, then they kind of shook their heads and said they didn't know what else to do, but I just needed to wait.
Finally, one doctor says, hey, do you like video games? I said, possibly (because I was new to gaming at that point). He says, well learn to love it. He said he thought it would help me form new neural connections.
So I started more gaming. I played a bunch of mmos. Most people said I was wasting my life away.
But hey, so fast forward:) About two years ago, I published my autobiography. So not only can I read now, but I wrote my own book.
I still game every day. I love it, and I appreciate what it did for me.
That story aside, I just plain don't see how people spend half their day scrolling their phones, but I'm wasting my life if I do my dailies.
Whatever adds to your joy is worth doing.

I don't blame you I have been following physics for close to 60 years my interest has never waned over this time.

Yeah, that one always baffles me.

Let's not forget how people will berate you for the gaming, and they will either immediately follow it up with sitting down to watch some brain-numbing thing on TV, or they'll do it WHILE watching some brain-numbing thing on TV, which is even better.

OR, or, my absolute favorite: They'll berate you for it, and then go back to their scrolling while in front of the TV.

On a side note, used to play a lot of MMOs myself too. Though, that was a different era... subscription payments! 56k! It was lovely! ...when it worked.

The only thing that keep me interested when I was employed was see what was wrong with my employer and what could I do to fix it, I would get obsessed with fixing it, just a big puzzle. they were paying me to fix, making it enjoyable. Every company that employed were shocked, at my imput, even large multinational. Set up reverse onus system on treatment line at Ford Ontario Truck Plant, I was employed by a supplier. Which became industry standard, soon after. Paint and treatment lines. All it took was showing how to do. To me Just a big puzzle, put the pieces in place and copy.

TV has the same issues as gaming shows written by people. Never as good as real life mysteries.

I dunno.

Usually real-life mysteries are... pretty mundane. It's always some doofus stealing things, or some corrupt CEO embezzling whatever, or some guy shooting some dude for nothing resembling a reason. Every time it's like, gee golly, never saw THAT resolution coming, nope, just like the last 20 times...

Now if you're talking about like, "mysteries of the universe", that... ehhh. I dunno. I dont get the appeal of that either. It's like, hey, here's this scientific concept, let's explore it... OH BOY MATH GIBBERISH JUST LIKE THE REST. But they had a "breakthrough" recently and now we know .000000001% more than before, yippee!

And I just... uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh. Hearing about either is depressing/dull to me.

Even hearing about new technology, I often just come away from it just thinking "well that's dumb". Granted, part of that is due to far too much exposure to computers & Windows, both of which seem to be getting worse over time, so my view of "improved" tech is usually just a sort of automatic distrust. Probably why I dont upgrade anything until it falls apart. Heck, the only new tech to impress/interest me in the last 20 years or so is VR, and... that's really about it. And even THAT is tainted.

Well, that's my pointless rambling thoughts on that stuff, anyway.

I like to watch nature shows and documentaries on TV. Not too impressed with forensic mysteries such as CSI, having a back ground in working in laboratories. Most of the instruments do not work like that, forensic science for a good part is not science. being a quality engineer. this bother's me most. some twit comes up with some crazy idea that sounds good it be comes a procedure no error limits is it reproducible?

My first thought was that they trade wives and live with them for a while so each can see what it's like to live with that other wife. But that wouldn't really make sense.

Just do what you want to do. Without hurting anybody. We all die in the end anyway. We are a step closer to death...with every breath.

We come into this world with nothing, and leave with nothing. So attachment to material possessions, is kind of foolish. Not that I don't like nice things.

As far as Video games go, maybe not the most responsible use of time in the world. But I'm not one to judge. As I've always done what I want to do, and live very much in the moment. Even if that's considered time-wasting, in many people's eyes. I've always been like this.

Reminds me of that 50s movie, "I Want To Live".

Where condemned prisoner Barbara Graham (played by Susan Hayward) is being guided to San Quentin's gas chamber. Where actor Dabs Greer as a guard whispers to her, "When the cyanide hits the water, breath as deeply as you can. It will go easier that way."

And Barbara scornfully yells back at him, "HOW DO YOU KNOW ?" ;)
