Some non-gamers are telling me gaming is a waste of time.

Any hobby may be considered a 'waste of time' if it's not enjoyed by someone else, as we all enjoy different hobbies and there's always someone out there that doesn't like someone else's hobby, they must therefore all be a waste of time lol. The point of a hobby is to enjoy your downtime, the form the hobby takes shape in is down to the individuals personality and interests. If someone finds the concept of another person enjoying different things to them, they're the ones with a problem. Sounds like they're trying to pointlessly articulate that they don't like gaming, but taking it a step further and dismissing the interest entirely, which is a bit rude and entirely pointless.

I say do whatever you enjoy and makes you happy as long as no one is getting hurt. Who cares about what you like to do in your free time?

I can tell you about League of Legends, an esport I like to play.

I got 2000 hours in League of Legends (but haven´t played it for years), hold my kartoffelsalat (potato salad).

I played video games since I was 6 years old and even as a child I had a very big pile of cd and dvd sleeves. but in the last months/years I played very unregularly and less, because less time and motivation. the last game I played/am playing was/is Gothic 1.

The people who say video games are a waste of time are usually the ones who spend hours binge-watching movies or TV shows. You can't even interact with or control what's happening, so how can it not be an even bigger waste of time than video games?

If you spend your time doing something that makes you happy, then it's not really a waste of time.
Actually, Pascal, the sea otter in Animal Crossing, once told me that. Usually the advice he gives is really weird, like, "They rang a bell to make a dog drool? Bells make everyone drool! Bells are delicious!"

They might as well see art as a waste of time, then. Or watching TV (that sweet double-standard).

I don't really see cooling off and rejuvenating to be a vice at all, unless it's ruining your life and totally taking over. Strangely though, gaming gets a lot of heat over binge-watching netflix shows and something tells me this is a bit of a generational bias for people who didn't grow up with games in their house.

Somehow nobody has ever given me crud over long graphic design sessions or producing music all day, but gaming just has this weird dark cloud associated with it thanks to those who will never understand it. The best thing to remember is that people who criticize your tastes are probably just terribly unhappy with their own.
