Tropical Cyclone Alfred is due to hit land directly over Brisbane in the next 24 hours but the area likely to suffer the worst damage is south of Brisbane - The Gold Coast. One of the most affluent regions in the whole country, an area where wealthy residents successfully appealed against the introduction of cyclone proof building codes back in the 80s because cyclones never come that far south.

Apprehension along Gold Coast's 400km of canals as Alfred bears down

I had not realized that there was a cyclone. Stay safe if you are in it's path.

The human will win that boxing match. T- Rex's arms are too short.

"Arm length don't mean nuthin'!" - Muhammed Ali, when once challenged by Wilt Chamberlain.

I still recall that. I sensed real fear in the Champ's face. The match never took place.

For some reason Meta has been doing it's best to block all information on it, none of us can understand why.
Facebook denies intentionally blocking searches for Cyclone Alfred

I live more than 2000 Km away so no personal danger, it is one of the most densely populated areas of the country though.
I couldn't find information on it. Just a bit on NPR and web searches yielded nothing. Now there's plenty.

For those who can't stand the suspense, the cyclone devolved into a what we call a tropical storm and brought lots of flooding, many people evacuated.

None of us have any idea why that information was being blocked, what it certainly did prove was that Facebook is an incredibly unreliable platform as it's far too prone to political influence by a deranged megalomaniac in a foreign country.

The cyclone itself turned out to be a bit of a fizzer, not too much wind destruction, but it hung around just off shore for a couple of days before landing and brought huge amounts of rain, and even today the weather system is still bringing in very heavy rainfall. Flooding is widespread and 300,000 homes are without power. Some could be without power for up to 2 weeks.

'Massive clean-up' ahead as more rain falls in Alfred's wake

I never needed any of those fidgets, I always had a novel in my lap. I'd just sit there reading and lost in my own world while a subconscious part of my brain did all the listening and learning for me. I was always a straight A student.

I can only infer from the white water that the flood is running over the road. This corner of the road reminds me strongly of the undeveloped areas of the Adirondacks.

I want to stop in at the store with OPALS on it's side. I managed to restrain myself from purchasing opal jewelry at the strawberry festival.

Yes, the creek behind the opal shop broke it's banks.

You'd have a tough time in Australia, there's opal shops all over the place. :)

A gorgeous piece. I love the blues and purples.
Opal is formed from compressed calcium - shells and bones. Quite a few opalised fossils have been found, including an almost complete fossil of a pliosaur we named Eric. There were rumours of another complete opalised fossil being found in Queensland a few years back but those rumours were quashed almost as soon as they were uttered, I expect due to security concerns. There'll probably be a new piece in one of our museums in the next few years.
