I'm still not sure how a drum helps keep bugs away. Are you thinking a drum of bug spray/insecticide? Otherwise I am drawing a blank this morning.I was thinking of the ear drum.

Trust me in this, it doesn't. Beetles are the worst because they try to burrow their way out and the pain is extreme. Someone told me to try and flush my ear with warm water - never ever do that, water sends the insect in to panic and it starts digging faster. Fill your ear hole with oil to pacify and kill the insect.

I don't know about beetles in particular. You mention digging so perhaps they dig through it. Generally speaking the ear drum prevents insects from going even deeper in and doing real lasting harm.
