Riddles

The answer is "a riddle".
It confounds people.
I messed up the noun and verb by saying that it makes holes; to riddle is to make holes. (I may have been influenced by thinking about a "redler", which is a tool used for putting the holes into matza.)
It's Riddell - a company known mostly for its American football helmets - that protects athletes.
A riddle is a sieve used for separating pebbles and twigs from soil.

When negative I'm pink or red, but when positive I'm purple or blue.
Just add gram for that's my clue.
What am I ?

I’m not a sound, though I sound like one.
I come from somewhere that sounds the same.
With the staff of life I am much desired.
Can you tell me what’s my name?

Echo.
It's a reflection of sound.
Bread is ready when banging on its bottom creates an echo.

I think that @AuAL is looking for what part of the bread gets tapped. The crust? The bottom?
I would think the bottom of the pan. If it’s still fluid then it should give a dull thud, as the sound waves get absorbed into the dough mass. If it’s done with crisp crust then the pan should ring somewhat.

Never baked bread, that’s just my guess.

I didn't really have a guess. The bit about a watermelon was just a joke because of that one question I quoted before it.

You tap the bottom of the loaf itself - not the pan.

The answer fits all the clues. An “echo” is a bit of a stretch in places - e.g. you aren’t getting an echo when you knock on a loaf. So yes, you knock on the bottom of the loaf. Fit that into the clue and it might take you a bit closer to the answer.

Another hint: I only took about 5 minutes to make this one up, but parts of it are, I think, quite poetic.

Another hint: there are two rhyming words in the clues given. There are also two rhyming words in the answers to the clues.
