  • I finally had to give in and take some pain killers. I just noticed something weird. I went to get the painkillers and I felt like I was pulling a very obviously discomforted expression on my face, but I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror and I looked about 10 times less distressed than I actually am. Strange!
Well, I've been hard at work fixing up my dad's Prius for it's MOT. I performed surgery on the Hybrid battery, all seems good. I tidied up a couple of small things, cleaned the interior and gave the outside a decent wipe down. So it's all looking pretty smart. I hope it passes tomorrow as I'm in considerable pain now. But I had to get it done. I hope it gets through so I can rest up :-)

It starts off the traction motor? That's nifty
Question: why are Prii so terribly slow? Are they just being driven by folks not in a big hurry, or are they actually that much slower than a gasoline car? Rode in an electric car once & it was like going up in a plane it was so fast.

They can operate in pure EV mode up to around 30mph depending on how the ECU thinks the battery is coping. I think people want to drive frugally and it becomes a bit of a game to get the highest MPG you can. My dad's has a 1.8 cc engine, it's rated as 0-60 in about 9.7 seconds. It's the fastest Prius you can get I believe...

...I actually think it may be a bit pessimistic though. It gets up and goes rather quickly. The CVT transmission is very responsive. But driving fast will make the MPG more conventional.
Mildred, I just wanted to say thank you for being a part of this community, and thank you for your kindness. Every time I see one of your messages, I just light up. You are so sweet and adorable and bubbly and your sense of humor is amazing! I'm so happy you're here. Thank you. <3

You are all so lovely! I'm so glad I found this forum, I feel so welcome and at home here! :-)
Sadly my phone camera can't do it justice, but the sky looks like the artwork for the Smashing Pumpkins Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness album. There's flocks of seagulls everywhere and the sky is sea green. I just can't get my phone to capture it :-/

They are just about visible I think, one or two of them at least :-) I think maybe I should invest in some sort of DSLR, occasionally I see things like this and think it would make a good photo, but phone cameras aren't up to the task :-/

The lens is everything. It doesn't matter how good the electronics is, you can't get a good shot with a 3mm lens.

When I saw A Flock Of Seagulls, I ran so far away.... great sound, terrible visuals. ;)
Everytime there's a knock at the door, I still hold out hope that it's the Cookie Monster :-)

Would that be a good thing? I mean, wouldn't it be better if it was someone delivering cookies rather than something that would eat the lot and not give you any?

I'm sure he would share, at least a little bit! When I was a kid I used to hope he would show up one day and knock at the door. But here's something! Have you ever seen Tom Waits and Cookie Monster in the same room ever?! Food for thought! :-)

I was just telling my neighbor cat person, l hope a cat person moves into the house for sale next to me.

Yes! The more of us that move into empty houses the better! I will keep my fingers crossed there will be huge numbers of cats moving in soon! :-)
Where is your profile picture from?

    MildredHubble
Hey! Sorry I've not had much chance to login recently! If you are asking about my profile picture, it's from the Worst Witch series of books by Jill Murphy. It's Mildred Hubble's cat Tabby. I have a Tabby cat too :-)
Uh been in a lot of pain again :-( I'm really struggling to deal with this car situation. I long for the days when I could blitz through a bunch of repairs in a day like it was nothing.

Sorry to hear that Mildred, sounds distressing. Hope the doctor can set you up right soon.

Thanks @Gerontius :-) I think I'm now after pure exasperation, going to have one more try with the doctor. Maybe this time they will actually conduct some tests or scans this time :-) I can hope at least :)

Good luck friend. I hope it's nothing too serious.
Oh dear car flashed up a bunch of warning lights when the guy took it in for it's retest fortunately they allowed me to clear them before it failed. Drove it a good few miles and no problems so hopefully we will get some good news touch wood. But now we have to wait longer :-(

Sounds like this car was fitted with a sweartronic computer at the factory.

It was better before, when cars didn't have all those lights. Something is flashing on my dashboard too. When it's cold, a warning light for something that has to do with engine temperature starts blinking. I'll bet it's just a faulty sensor and that it's very annoying and expensive to fix.
    MildredHubble
    MildredHubble
Well shenanigans and skulduggery! They failed it due to warning lights. Now here's the dumb part. We took it back after clearing the codes and they didn't even test it. It hadn't moved! I've concluded the parking brake is fine you literally can't move the car with it even slightly applied. But other than that the 12v battery is weak causing the Christmas lights to come on.
Not sure who the moron was who last worked on my dad's new car but after all the copper slip I found fusing together every piece of the braking system I imagine they look like this...
    MildredHubble
    MildredHubble
Exactly! Common sense engineering! I just adjusted the parking brake lever. It's a foot pedal on these cars. Not what I would have chosen but it works lol. It seems to be holding firm so fingers crossed for its retest tomorrow! :)
    maycontainthunder
    maycontainthunder
Good luck on the retest! When I used to take bikes for MOTs the tester told me of an early bike he tested. The front brake recorded zero percent efficiency and the rear provided just enough for it to get a pass! This would've been the kind that you pull the decompressor in and push it as fast as you can then jump on, drop the decompressor and hope it starts!
    MildredHubble
    MildredHubble
Thanks! :-) I hope it will sail through now. It's good to know that the brakes are all nice and fresh and hopefully there will be no further copper slip shenanigans! :-)
Just been watching Sophie From Mars on YouTube responding to a Daily Mail transphobic article about her. I feel so bad for her :-( I'm trying to get to sleep but I think I just made myself a bit too angry!

If you want to feel bad - read the Daily Mail.

My parents have read it for decades and their opinions on the world can be very obtuse, and full of intense worries and distrust.

The Daily Fail print mostly nonsense written by people who are naturally immune from brain eating amoebas.

@Raggamuffin I have some relatives that read it too and I've noticed their opinions become increasingly right wing :-( It's sad. @maycontainthunder, I couldn't agree more!
I found my old childhood joke book on eBay and it just arrived! It still makes me laugh now :-)

Yeah, when I was in Florida there was definitely a lot more roadkill than there is here. And a lot more vultures. You guys also have the black vultures there which are even creepier than our native turkey vultures! I do honestly like vultures though, for some reason.
    MildredHubble
    MildredHubble
Oh dear! Poor owl! To be honest it wouldn't surprise me if people where I live would do things like that! They aren't the brightest round here! :smilecat:

Almost gotten my guitar finished. No doubt there will be some tweaks when it's done. The cloned active circuitry seems to be authentic sounding. Just one issue with my phase switch, it's only working in one direction so that's a head scratcher. But wow, this thing can sound sweet and lilting or like a total wrecking ball! :-)
Ugh. I feel sick. Every night I feel like I've been breathing in fumes from a car exhaust. Definitely nothing in the house causing it, we have detectors. No one else seems to be affected :-/
    MildredHubble
    MildredHubble
We do have an air purifier, I suppose it has been a while since I last put it on. I'm trying to think if anything has changed in the house recently, but I can't think of anything.

If your regional temperatures have been fluctuating between freezing and thawing that can have an impact on particulate matter in the air.

Dyeing my hair again. The colour had gotten a bit tired and greyish and rats nesty. Hoping for the same improvement in mood like last time. Though I shouldn't get greedy as today I've spontaneously started feely quite good for the first time in a very long time! :-)

Have you ever played with natural pigments, such as henna? That's a fun one to dye your hair with.

    Luca
Dyed mine back to my natural color recently after going blonde for a while. I definitely look better as a brunette!
    MildredHubble
    MildredHubble
I have @Yeshuasdaughter many years ago I had quite a lot of black henna. That was enough to dye my hair and the hair of several others for a year or more. A little seems to go a long way. The only drawbacks were that after a few weeks it would have washed out and that it could run off onto chairs or pillows. :-)
Gerry Rafferty, Baker Street, Wharfedale Linton 3XPs, Trio Amplifier. A treat for the ears! Magic! (No need for Elon Musk's Ambien or red wine!)
Slightly annoyed, just went to put a record on and left channel of the amplifier is clipped and has no bass response. Uhhh, so annoying, I was going to enjoy a record after finally getting some tiding done. I suppose it's time to dig out the oscilloscope and do some digging. Suspect a failed capacitor.

That's cool! :-) I hope you will succeed! :-) But maybe I've had a little more experience with these sorts of things, I don't know if I'm all that further ahead of you :-) You seem to have at least been trying to figure it out :-) Curiosity often gets you there in the end!
