I have probably been close, but maybe not through here - driving from Haarlem to Brussels. I was trying to get to Namur by lunchtime, but missed my exit on the Brussels ring road and ended up going via Waterloo. Imagine my surprise as I realised I was driving past the battlefield.

I have another “S” for Bremen, the Spuckstein. This is a stone set in the pavement of the Domshof (the cathedral square) to mark the spot where the serial killer Gesche Gottfried was executed. She had poisoned 15 people in the early 19th century. The stone’s name is because the people of Bremen used to spit on it to express their disgust at her crimes.

It was a bit wet while I was there - this was the street outside my hotel one evening. Seeing this you realise why there were steps up before you went down into the subway stations.

Coos Bay, Oregon
Several decades ago it would have been placed under "M", for the old name of Marshfield. The current name seems a good improvement over the old one..........?

A wee little forest town, up in the Sonora Pass of the Stanislaus National Forest. Named after these bubbly looking spires, called the Dardanelles, that sit atop a beautiful cliff.

Er-Rissani is a region of hamada, rocky desert, on the north-west edge of the Sahara.

[Edit: another shot, not directly sunwards, showing the rock is actually quite dark.]

A small, lovely coastal city, famous for its treacherous, unpredictable surf, and endless sand dunes.

Guadalajara, Mexico

Two interior views this time; the first from the Palacio de Gobierno, is part of the murals by José Clemente Orozco, “The People and Its Leaders” above the main staircase depicting the revolutionary leader wielding a flaming torch to ignite the independence movement.

The second is a more pedestrian view, the interior of the hotel I stayed in:

I liked it.
