Cars and car troubles

Some awesome in car footage of the pikes peak hill climb, pity about the music.

The Pike's Peak run starts around 8,000 feet above sea level and ends at 14,000 feet in very thin air...carbureted vehicles suffer from barometric pressure changes and jetting for fuel at the bottom will leave a car running rich at the top...modern injected cars can compensate for this change by taking a barometric pressure read during the entire climb...on a planned club meet once to the peak,a local racer was to provide the other gearheads with proper jetting to get our cars to run it better towards the top...I jet for 1,000 feet...

Warwick, are Rat Rods a big deal in New Zealand?

Not too many of them here, but they always come out for Hot August Nights each year.

In some areas they are. I think they are around .
Most of the magazines I get are from the Us.
For me I like to see how things are put together.

......DOOD........someone told my mom a friend of theirs wants to trade their 06 Malibu for both my mom's Blazer and MY Honda......I was like ".........really? we need two vehicles not just swapping to still have only one.....what do you think? I don't really want to get rid of the Honda, I have put too much work into it"

I mean seriously..........two vehicles for one?!? granted one of them doesn't run right now but the other one I have put a sh*t ton of money into, it may not run that great but it still runs (and I believe the problems are relatively small ones, except perhaps the cooling problem)

Butterfly lady I would say you are better to keep your cars, that way you know what problems you are dealing with, you don,t know any thing about the other car.

There is too little information available to make a determination based on what you posted here...I will assume the Blazer does not run and the Honda has an unspecified cooling problem...you have not stated manufacturing years of your vehicles, the mileages on them or overall conditions of the vehicles...the '06 Malibu is an unknown here as well...is it showing high mileage, wrecked or have a shady past of ill repair or neglect? As a former automotive business owner/technician,I feel qualified to assist you with your question, but will need a lot more information to help you with your decision...Trading good for bad makes no sense at all,but I hope you can tell the difference...explain the Honda cooling problem as best as you can to me and I will offer you further advice on it...tell me more about all of the cars overall conditions...this deal sounds shady to me...

The Blazer is a 93, it was taken off the road when it stopped shifting but I think I got that problem fixed but we didn't have it tagged and insured so I could test drive it without getting pulled over by the cops (has happened too many times already, I didn't want to take a chance) It sat for 5 years, 2 of those at a friends house out in the country where the squirrels and rats chewed up the wires under the hood. it needs a lot of work now after sitting for that long (and in that environment) The Honda is a 92 I believe it is a slight head gasket problem but I am not sure. I have already replaced many of the hoses, it has a new all aluminum radiator in it but it is past time for a timing belt (and usually the water pump is done at the same time) Most of the time the cooling problem occurs when it is low on oil. I know that it is burning oil and that is because from the time I got it, the lady told me when she gave it to me that the piston rings were bad. the only thing that I know about the Malibu is it has 67,000 miles on it.

The Blazer will probably never run again without a lot of work and money, sitting for 5 years is not good. Not to mention the wiring and whatever else the rats ate. So actually, unless you do the work on the Blazer (which is probably what the guy who wants it is planning on doing) the Honda is the only car that may be reasonably worth it to get running. Sounds like in reality it's a good trade IF the Malibu is a good car. Might want to have it checked out before making a decision.

there will always be hidden problems when you don't buy a car brand spanking new, I know what the problems are with my Honda and Blazer. It is still used, it was in someone elses hands for 8 years, who knows what the hell they did to it during that time. I would rather not take the chance of trading a car where I KNOW the problems for a car that I know NOTHING about. Even if I have it checked out, there is no telling what kind of problems are going to be there that won't be seen when the car is checked out.

Sounds like a good plan.

I agree with Arrogant Penguin...price the repairs on the Honda...keep in mind there is not really ever a slight headgasket leak...the two ways to determine if it is a gasket is to monitor the running condition of the exhaust which will resemble a white smoke screen behind the car when driving it and sporadic engine overheating immediately after the car is started, with suggested thermostat problems or even leaks as you have mentioned a replacement consistent with an improper diagnosis. (parts changer syndrome) The other type of headgasket leak is not into the combustion chamber, but rather into the oil, which will be manifested in a creamy milky appearance of the oil on your dipstick...oil and coolant are like mixing vinegar with oil for a salad, only the compound does not settle quickly...coolant mixed with oil is a horrible lubricant and will wreak major havoc on your engine's rotating assemblies (crankshaft and connecting rod bearing failure) major $ compared to a proper headgasket repair and also a great time to replace the waterpump and timing belt as the car is disabled during the gasket job...you know more about the Honda going in and those cars of it's era are known to be durable with minor maintenance...ignore the timing belt on that car and you will learn about the cost of a headgasket as those engines are interference engines that always bend valves when the belt snaps requiring removal of the cylinderhead to repair it at higher costs with the added valves...look at your budget and determine if you can afford to get your car repaired...it might be your wisest choice...it sounds to me the Blazer is just another yard ornament now and only of value in pieces and parts and we know no history of the Malibu...(look for evidence of the use of hatchets and cleavers...the trademarks of true butchers)... the rings on Hondas with higher mileage are known to pass some oil when running and are only a problem if the oil is fouling the plugs

Thank you for this information.

I know for sure it is not mixing, I have been monitoring it closely. my exhaust is more blue then white. the only time it overheats is when I need close to a quart of oil. I know about the interference engine and have been worried about it for quite some time, we barely make it month to month without any car repairs and we are too far behind on bills to even think about doing anything about it so basically I am screwed.
